Lessons from COVID-19 for wildlife ranching in a changing world

The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to assess the impacts of a global disturbance on conservation land uses and learn from responses crisis enable more resilient systems. To understand socio-economic diverse wildlife working lands COVID-19, we surveyed owners managers 78 private ranches (wildlife lands), 23 agricultural farms (conventional lands) six public protected areas in South Africa. Most lost than 75% their revenues during 2020, while most less 10%. impact was varied. Ranches with activities, particularly mixed wildlife–agriculture systems, revenue, shifting activities those heavily impacted (international ecotourism, trophy hunting) affected (for example, meat, livestock).
